COMING HOME AFTER 78 YEARS, Clayton Hero HAROLD KENDALL COSTILL’S remains will finally be returned home…..
CLAYTON – Funeral services for Harold Kendall Costill, who died in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. at the CHS Performing Arts Center, Pop Kramer Blvd., Clayton, NJ. Family will begin greeting visitors at 10:00 a.m. A burial, with full military honors, will immediately follow the service at the Cedar Green Cemetery, located next to the high school, where Harold will be laid to rest in the Costill family plot.

Harold’s brother, Gene D. Costill, 93 years old, and a former mayor of Clayton, is the closest living relative. Harold’s siblings, Robert S. Costill, Allan H. Costill, and Joan Costill Burke, did not survive to see their brother return home.

U.S. Navy Fireman Third Class Harold K. Costill, 18 years old, was on board the U.S.S. West Virginia and on duty in the engine room at the time of the attack. The battleship was moored at Ford Island, Hawaii. Harold’s remains were one of 35 casualties associated with the USS West Virginia, interred in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, more commonly known as the Punchbowl Cemetery, in Honolulu, Hawaii.
