Passing of Long Time Member Fred Walker
It is with deep sadness we report the passing of long time Legionnaire, Fred Walker. He was a member of American Legion Post 372 for over 30 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, including his son Billy who is SAL member at Post 372.
Frederick Martin Walker, of Cherry Hill, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2024, at the age of 92. Born on February 5, 1932, in South Philadelphia, Fred's life was a testament to the values of hard work, dedication, and the importance of family.
Fred spent his formative years in Maple Shade He attended Moorestown High School, where he laid the foundations for a life of service and commitment. Following his education, Fred answered the call of duty and served his country as an Army Sergeant and Medic in a MASH unit during the Korean War, a role that showcased his bravery and compassion.
After his military service, Fred returned to his roots and became a respected shop foreman in the auto body business. His work ethic and expertise in the trade were unparalleled, and he was known for his ability to fix just about anything. Fred's hands were rarely still, as he was always involved in a project or lending his skills to those in need.
Upon retirement, Fred's industrious nature did not wane. He joined forces with his son David, installing tile and continuing to contribute to the community until the age of 85. His ability to work with his hands was matched only by the love and care he put into every task.
Fred's life was defined by his love of family and his spirited personality. He enjoyed family gatherings, Eagles tailgates, following Camden Catholic wrestling teams and telling jokes with friends at Houlihans. Together, he created cherished memories with family and friends that will endure.
Fred was predeceased by his mother, Alice Burns, his brother William J. Walker, his son Steven, and grandsons David Walker Jr. and William Walker Jr. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his surviving family members. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Elizabeth, and their children: William (Patty), Kathy, Sharon (Virgil), Paul (Soleni), David (Denise), and Michael (Angela). His grandchildren Allison (Christian), Kevin, Carolyn, Chelsea (Michael), Katie, Dylan, Lauren, and Isabella will miss their grandfather's fun nature. Fred was also blessed with a great-granddaughter, Leyna. All of his grandchildren brought him immense joy. His legacy extends beyond his immediate family, as he was an uncle and friend to many. His nieces, nephews, and friends will remember him for his fun loving personality.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing Saturday, August 17th from 10 am until 12 pm at Christ Our Light RC Church, 402 North Kings Highway, Cherry Hill. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 pm. Interment will be private. Remembrances can be made through contributions to Men of Malvern Retreat House in Fred Walkers’ name.
