100th Anniversary Celebration of the American Legion
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.
It was founded on four pillars: Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation, National Security, Americanism, and Children & Youth. Each of these pillars encompasses a variety of programs that benefit our nation’s veterans, its servicemembers, their families, the youth of America and ordinary citizens. These programs, and the men and women who take the time to perform them allow The American Legion to make a difference on the local, state and national levels. It’s who we are and what we do.
On a township level, Delaware Township Memorial Post 372 received its temporary charter on May 18, 1950, a permanent charter on August 31, 1951, and was officially renamed Cherry Hill Memorial Post 372 on March 19, 1964.
Since its founding in 1950, the Cherry Hill American Legion has embraced it’s mission with countless programs and events, including the Boys & Girls State Program, Scholarships, Legion Youth Baseball, assisting in VA Claims, providing activities for our veterans, welcome homes for returning soldiers and helping struggling veterans to name a few.
Our American Legion continues to honor and remember our deceased veterans by flagging our local cemeteries, Memorial Day Services, partaking in their funerals, flag lines, 5K Runs and other events in remembrance of the fallen. Among one of the most memorable and touching undertakings of the Cherry Hill American Legion was the hosting of “The Wall That Heals”, the traveling Vietnam Wall, honoring all of our Vietnam veterans killed in action.
In commemorating the Legion history and mission, at the Cherry Hill Township Memorial Day Service we had displays (with photos) of our Camden County/Cherry Hill Vietnam KIA’s, Korean War KIA, Iraq/Afghanistan KIA and articles/photos of honoring them with Candlelight Services, Park Dedications, Funeral Detail, Flag Lines, etc.
We also displayed a more in depth look into our American Legion Post 372 history at our NJ American Legion Statewide Services, Parade and Social on June 3, 2019.
