Maple Shade man ID’d as turkey hunter killed on Rt. 70
Tuesday, May 13, 2014 SOUTHAMPTON — The New Jersey State Police have released the identity of a turkey hunter who was killed early Monday after he was struck by two vehicles on Route 70 near Purgatory Road.
Meade White, 73, of Maple Shade, was wearing “leafy, dark camouflage” while crossing the highway about 5 a.m. when he was struck by a westbound Mercedes-Benz and knocked into the eastbound lane, the state police said.
The driver of the Mercedes stopped and tried to wave down an eastbound tractor-trailer as it approached, but the vehicle did not stop and ran over White.
The trucker continued to his nearby workplace and later, after learning of the accident, told investigators he did not see White and was unaware of what he had hit.
White’s vehicle later was found on the side of the road near the accident scene.
The names of the Mercedes driver and truck driver were not released Tuesday. An investigation into the accident is ongoing; no charges have been filed against either driver.
