On June 23, 2008, thirty year old Capt Gregory Dalessio of Cherry Hill, NJ was killed on his second tour of duty in Iraq.  He died of wounds sustained in Salman Pak, Iraq, when his patrol encountered small arms fire during combat operations.

Although the weather was rather wet the morning of the race, it didnt stop the runners and the Warriors Watch from coming out! The Warriors Watch lined the starting line with their motorcycles and formed a flag line – quite a sight! The Cherry Hill Police directed traffic and provided the lead escort for the runners while the Cherry Hill Fire Department draped the big American flag behind the finish line.

Those who knew Greg are quick to point out two traits in his life – his love for his family and his faith in God. He was loved by those who knew him and is said to have shone a light on all their lives. For a man adored by his siblings and community, a 5K memorial walk/run is scheduled every December.

To prepare for this years 2nd Annual 5K walk/run, American Legion members Sue Quinn-Morris and Rita Knox, along with Cherry Hill Alternative School Teacher Mr. Koester and students, Danny Knox, Rob Joseph, and Mike Ito lined the 5K route with American Flags the day before the race. The flags are used as directions for the runners – they follow the flags as it weaves through the Knollwood section – which is where Greg grew up.
